My Artists Statement...
I come from a family of artists. My aunt Kimberley is a painter, my uncle Justin is a sculptor, and my grandmother Cindy was a painter as well. Fortunately, I inherited their creative genes. You see, I was exposed to art and design at a very young age. I have countless memories of nights spent with my Uncle Justin in his workshop, and blissful memories of my grandmother and I drawing snowmen on our flight to Disney World years ago. In fact, most of the memories I have of my family members are related to art and design. My aunt, uncle, and grandmother all take pride in their work as artists, and much of my inspiration to pursue a career in design comes from the memories I have shared with them as a child.
First and foremost, I enjoy all kinds of art. I believe that art can be extremely powerful not only for the viewer, but for the artist themselves. Art is considered a form of expression. I consider myself a very emotional person, and one thing I pride myself on is my ability to express my emotion to others. One of the ways I am capable of expressing my emotion is through art. Many people consider art to be its own language, a very unique and interpretive method of communication as do I. As I said before, much of my inspiration comes from the memories I have shared with members of my family, however the remainder of inspiration springs from my emotion. Recently, I have found inspiration from the variety of emotion I experience on the lacrosse field. Incorporating that emotion into my artwork has become especially rewarding to me. Examples of such artwork can be viewed in my portfolio titled, "Not just another day, but another opportunity".
In spring semester of 2013 at James Madison University, I had the pleasure of taking two studio art classes: ART 104: Introduction to Drawing I, and ART 102: 2D Design. In these foundation classes, I learned a lot about myself as an artist, and truly acknowledged my undeniable passion for art and design. Throughout spring semester I developed my own personal style, which I consider to be delicate, clean, controlled, soft, and often colorful. I enjoy working with a variety of mediums including charcoal, graphite, acrylic paint, and multi-media. I became most familiar with collaging, and subtractive drawing. Overall, I am pleased with my experience in these foundation classes, for they have given me the opportunity to learn more about myself as an artist. I look forward to the duration of my college career, and I can only hope James Madison University will continue to present rich opportunities for me in my pursuit of becoming a designer.
